Cabinet Painting vs. Replacing Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets set the tone for the whole room. When they look worn or dated, the kitchen does too. Many homeowners assume the only fix is new cabinets. But if your cabinet boxes are in good shape, painting them can give you a new look for far less money and in far less time.

Here is how to decide which option makes sense for your kitchen.

The big difference: cost

New cabinets are one of the most expensive parts of a kitchen remodel. Once you add removal, installation, and new counters that often have to be replaced at the same time, costs climb fast.

Painting keeps the cabinets you already have. You pay for labor and materials to refinish them, and your counters, backsplash, and plumbing stay where they are. For a typical Phoenix kitchen, professional cabinet painting usually runs a fraction of what replacement would cost.

Time and disruption

Replacing cabinets can take your kitchen out of service for weeks. There is demolition, waiting on orders, installation, and often new counters.

Painting is much faster. Most kitchens take about a week from start to finish. Doors and drawers go to a work area to be sprayed, while the boxes are prepped and painted in place. You can often use parts of your kitchen during the job.

When painting is the right choice

Painting is a great fit when:

• The cabinet boxes are solid. Wood or good-quality plywood boxes that are not water-damaged or sagging.
• You like the layout. Painting changes the look, not where things are.
• The doors are a style you can live with. Shaker, raised panel, and flat doors all paint well.
• You want a quick, affordable update. Before selling, or just to refresh the room.

Oak cabinets from the 1990s and 2000s are some of the most common ones we paint in Phoenix. Once they are primed and painted white, greige, or a deep color like navy, they look like a completely different kitchen.

When replacing makes more sense

Replacing may be the better choice when:

• Boxes are damaged. Water damage under the sink, swollen particleboard, or broken frames.
• You want a new layout. Moving the sink, adding an island, or changing where appliances go.
• Doors are a style you dislike and new doors alone would not solve it.
• The cabinets are thin laminate that is peeling. Laminate can sometimes be painted, but badly damaged laminate is hard to save.

There is also a middle path: keep the boxes, replace just the doors and drawer fronts, then paint everything to match.

What makes a cabinet paint job last

A painted cabinet gets opened, closed, bumped, and wiped every day. The finish has to be tough. Here is what separates a lasting job from one that chips in a year:

Thorough cleaning

Kitchen cabinets collect grease, even when they look clean. Paint will not stick to grease. Every surface must be degreased before anything else happens.

Sanding and primer

Cabinets usually have a slick factory finish. We scuff-sand every surface and use a bonding primer made to grip glossy finishes. On oak, a primer that blocks tannins keeps the wood’s natural color from bleeding through.

Cabinet-grade enamel, not wall paint

Wall paint stays too soft for cabinets. We use a hard cabinet enamel that levels out smooth and cures to a durable finish.

Spraying for a smooth finish

Brushes and rollers can leave marks. We spray doors and drawers for a smooth, factory-like look. Our spray painting setup lets us get that finish without overspray landing anywhere else.

Cure time

A note on Phoenix kitchens
